Be part of building Scotland's future

Scottish Enterprise is Scotland's national and international economic development agency. We work to transform the Scottish economy by helping businesses to innovate and scale, creating high-value jobs, boosting productivity, and growing national wealth.

Could you explain in a clear and powerful way why it’s so crucial that we continue to grow Scotland’s economy, tackle persistent economic challenges head-on and support transformational change?

Could you craft a compelling and persuasive case setting out why Scotland is the best place in the world to do business and grow your company?

If so, we look forward to hearing from you. We’re looking for a talented, confident and experienced communications professional to work with senior leaders as our External Engagement Lead.

The role

Working in Scottish Enterprise’s Corporate Affairs team, you’ll work closely with the Chief Executive and his office as well as other senior leaders across the organisation to help communicate our ambitions and priorities in a clear and compelling way to different audiences.

You’ll join us at a pivotal point as we transition to a missions-based organisation, embodying our values of being ambitious, impactful and dynamic, with a laser focus on three core priorities which will deliver a transformational impact to the Scottish economy. More than ever before, engaging with key strategic stakeholders is critically important to the successful delivery of our missions, and you’ll be instrumental in defining how, where and with whom our CEO and other senior leaders engage.

We launched our refreshed brand identity in January this year as part of our wider approach to repositioning Scottish Enterprise. You’ll ensure CEO and leadership comms consistently articulate our tone of voice and brand and adding value to their sectoral and political intelligence.

This fast-paced communications role will put you at the centre of a stimulating and fascinating team. It’s your chance to research and craft content around economic opportunities, successful companies and transformational projects that our CEO and senior leaders will deliver.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying and securing strategic speaking and key stakeholder engagement opportunities where we can reposition Scottish Enterprise and our mission-based approach.
  • Researching and writing speeches for our Chief Executive and senior leadership team, tailoring the style and content to suit each speaker and audience.
  • Creating content for other channels – including social media – and delivering strong, consistent messages on behalf of the CEO and Executive Leadership Team.
  • Working with the Corporate Affairs team and leadership colleagues to develop a streamlined speechwriting process, agree a clear strategy for delivery, and ensure this is recognised across the organisation.
  • Designing messaging capable of reaching a wider audience through Scottish Enterprise’s full range of communication channels.
  • Working collaboratively across Scottish Enterprise to identify communication opportunities and ensuring consistency of external messaging for senior staff.
  • Shaping, influencing and articulating a strategic narrative, and promoting this across Scottish Enterprise.
  • Working closely with partner organisations, government, key stakeholders and influencers to ensure Scottish Enterprise is viewed positively, and that our strategic messaging is well understood.
  • Developing a work plan and content mining strategy so all communications stay relevant and engaging.

Who we're looking for

Dynamic, proactive and inquisitive, you’ll be a writer with limitless energy, vision and tenacity. You’ll know how to identify and secure the right kinds of high-profile engagement opportunities. You’ll also have the confidence and know-how to spotlight our CEO and other senior leaders to deliver the greatest impact.

An experienced communications professional, you'll have a strong track record of securing speaking opportunities and crafting considered, impactful speeches and articles. Alternatively, you’ll be able to evidence examples of work that proves you have what it takes to do this with ease and flair.

First-class written and spoken communication skills go without saying. You should also have strong organisational skills, be comfortable working alone as well as within a team, and be unfazed by close collaboration with very senior colleagues.
