Be part of building Scotland's future

Scottish Enterprise is Scotland's national and international economic development agency. We work to transform the Scottish economy by helping businesses to innovate and scale, creating high-value jobs, boosting productivity, and growing national wealth.

The role

As part of our Grant Operations Team, who manage grant funding in the region of £70 million to £80 million a year, you’ll develop and issue contracts, review claims and authorise payments to help companies across Scotland thrive. Your portfolio will include different sizes of project for which you will follow guidance and update our systems, ensuring your work is compliant and undertaken to the highest standards in this stringently audited part of our organisation.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and signing contracts, raising purchase orders and authorising payments within delegated authority levels
  • Working with colleagues in various teams across our organisation – from Legal to Appraisers
  • Helping external companies apply for funding to resolve any contractual issues (like adding bespoke conditions and agreeing project contract variations)
  • Proactively keeping in touch with companies to help them make ‘right first time’ claims as submission dates approach
  • Understanding grant products, subsidy rules, and contract conditions
  • Reviewing, reconciling, and seeking further evidence from companies where necessary to make sure claim evidence is compliant with the terms and conditions of the grant
  • Recording your decision-making rationale before authorising the timely payment of grant claims
  • Negotiating and agreeing repayment of grants as appropriate
  • Carrying out post-completion monitoring, including analysing reports, and recommending appropriate action
  • Identifying issues and proposing and implementing solutions across Grant Operations

Who we're looking for

Your background in finance, banking, or grant management, has made you comfortable working with internal and external customers to strict deadlines. You’ll bring a flexible, adaptable approach and used to managing your own workload. You’ll also be confident working as part of a team or on your own.

Your skills, abilities and experience should include:

  • A background in accountancy, finance, banking or public sector grant funding
  • Qualifications or skills and experience at SCQF Level 9
  • An ability to build strong internal relationships and deal with customers in person, over the phone or video calls, and by email
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Personal resilience in overcoming setbacks and challenges
  • The ability to review and process a lot of information with a high degree of accuracy, outlining your thought process before making your own decisions. A sound working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint, plus an ability to become proficient quickly in other software applications
  • Effective time management skills and a flexible approach
  • The ability to work under pressure – particularly at year-end, when the majority of our claims need to be processed

Ideally, but not essentially, you’ll also have:

  • A solid working knowledge of contact management and financial payment systems
  • Experience of analysing complex financial information
  • A clear understanding of broad economic development issues
  • A good level of presentational skills
