Joining the energy transition: how FoundOcean changed focus

Learn how FoundOcean applied its grouting technology, typically used to support oil and gas platforms, to the energy transition sector.

For decades, FoundOcean provided grouting solutions for oil and gas companies. With our help, the company has now moved into the energy transition sector. This has unlocked a range of new opportunities in the UK, Europe and beyond.

Based in Livingston, West Lothian, FoundOcean is the largest dedicated offshore construction grouting company in the world. In recent years, we’ve been working with the company to help it apply its technology to the renewables space.

As a result, FoundOcean became one of the first Scottish companies to successfully diversify into offshore wind. It has since worked on several wind farm projects in the UK and Europe.

Today, the company is helping to build America's first large-scale offshore wind farm. It’s also looking to expand into new markets in the Americas and southeast Asia.

Why FoundOcean joined the energy transition

FoundOcean supplies grouting technology that holds up large offshore structures, as well as the materials, equipment and personnel needed to mix and pump it.

Traditionally, this technology has been used to support oil and gas platforms. But the company saw new, exciting opportunities arising from Scotland’s energy transition. It knew that its cement-based bonding solutions could be applied to different types of floating wind turbine, and it decided to make a change.

FoundOcean joined the energy transition supply chain and multiplied the number of opportunities available to it. Kerr Wright, FoundOcean’s Managing Director, says:

“The oil and gas industry would potentially give us the opportunity to work on around 10 projects a year. Each of those projects was based around one structure.

“In offshore renewables, we’re seeing a similar number of available projects – but, in one project, there are maybe up to a hundred structures or even more. The size and scale of projects available to us is massive.”

Unlocking new opportunities overseas

By taking what Kerr describes as a "leap of faith" into a new industry, the company has been able to build its client base overseas.

FoundOcean has already developed a strong reputation in Europe as an important energy transition supplier. By taking advantage of Scotland’s world-class manufacturing expertise, the company is able keep up with the rapid development of renewable energy projects across Europe.

But the company isn’t stopping there. It’s especially excited about its current project: helping to build the USA’s first large-scale offshore wind farm.

It has now set its sights even further afield. Kerr says:

“FoundOcean is a hugely ambitious company. We’ve done very well over the last few years working in offshore renewables, primarily in Europe, and obviously in the UK. But we’re looking to take that expertise around the globe.

“The opportunities are endless for us now. In the Americas and Asia, there are various countries looking to dip their toe in offshore construction. But not just in offshore wind. There are also opportunities in carbon capture and green energy production, which could become whole new vectors for us as a company.

“If you’re interested in expanding your business that way, I would recommend speaking to Scottish Enterprise.”

Support from Scottish Enterprise

Kerr says that our support – including support from Scottish Development International (SDI, our international arm) – has been a central part of FoundOcean’s success in its new sector. He’s keen to highlight how we’ve helped the company build connections as it expands its scope:

“We would pick up the phone [to Scottish Enterprise] when looking at moving into a new market, and we’d maybe get their advice on some of the challenges, and then ask if they have any contacts that can help us out. By putting us in contact with the right people, [Scottish Enterprise’s support] allows us to build those relationships.

“There are also meet-and-greet events that we’ve been so fortunate to be part of. It varies wildly, from coffees, to lunch-and-learn events, to evening events. We’re making introductions to new clients and opening doors.”

The company was pleasantly surprised by the level of support it received:

“Whenever a conversation seems likely to reach a dead end, maybe because Scottish Enterprise doesn’t have the answer, they’ll put us in contact with someone that could potentially help us – someone that they’re aware of through their network.

“SDI and the GlobalScot programme helped set up our operations in the US, opening doors for us and playing a fundamental role in helping build up our business in a new region."
