The role

With responsibility for the overall operational management of the Debt Team within the Entrepreneurship and Investment Directorate (E&I), you’ll have the opportunity to shape and refine our future debt offering, engaging closely with the market and external commercial lenders.
 
It’ll be up to you to lead a team of specialists that not only structures and transacts complex debt for a diverse portfolio of existing loans, but also deals with external lenders, asset funders and specialist debt providers. Through this team, you’ll help to build knowledge of Scotland’s lending market and support Scottish Enterprise’s strategic priorities.

Your previous experience of providing commercial loans, together with your awareness of economically led lending, will complement your network of contacts in the Scottish funding market as you develop business and influence new and innovative funding approaches. You’ll also have direct people management responsibilities for all specialists within the team: coaching, mentoring and supporting colleagues to maximise their potential. 
 
Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading on the strategic direction, co-ordination and delivery of Scottish Enterprise’s debt offering, with ultimate responsibility for all areas of delivery and ongoing management of the portfolio
  • Developing and leading on the proactive promotion and awareness raising strategy for Scottish Enterprise’s debt offering – this will include representing Scottish Enterprise at events and delivering internal and external presentations, panel appearances, briefings and case studies
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, both internally and externally, and using those relationships and contacts to make valuable introductions across Scottish Enterprise and the wider investment community in Scotland and maximise opportunities to enhance our profile
  • Managing a team of professionals and realising the potential of staff through the performance management process, coaching and team building activities
  • Providing detailed advice on deal approval, deal structuring and negotiation, legal completion and the ongoing management of the loan portfolio
  • Building new and maintaining existing relationships with key industry lenders in order to ensure an appropriate strategic direction and continued delivery of impactful funding, as well as being a source of knowledge and expertise on debt funding opportunities for companies that we work with
  • Active participation in the Entrepreneurship and Investments Extended Management Team, Entrepreneurship and Investments Investment Committee, Scottish Enterprise project teams, and industry committees and panels

Who we're looking for

Your skills, abilities and experience should include:

  • Education to SCQF Level 10, or equivalent experience in accountancy, banking, law, or investment
  • Experience of debt structuring and portfolio management gained through working in a corporate finance or banking/private debt background
  • Experience leading a team to deliver impactful work
  • Excellent relationship management skills
  • Strong business development skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence at a strategic level and the confidence to challenge where appropriate
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to creatively think of new solutions to unique funding situations
  • Good connections and visibility within the Scottish investment community
